CSI Group’s Methanol Fuel Engines Boost Green Shipping on the Yangtze River

CSI's Methanol Fuel Engines

Recently, the MDF6210CR methanol-diesel dual-fuel engine, independently developed by CSI Group, was shipped in bulk to Chongqing, where it will soon be installed on a new fleet of 110-meter oil/chemical tankers operating in the Yangtze River Basin. Following the successful industrialisation of LNG dual-fuel and LNG single-fuel engines, it marks another major milestone in the company’s green and low-carbon fuel engine development. It also represents the first application of methanol engine key technology under CSI’s national “Vanguard Project,” showcasing a significant breakthrough in core marine engine technologies under the “Ning Dong” 宁动 brand.

This engine adopts electronically controlled high-pressure common rail diesel injection ignition technology, achieving the highest substitution rate among similar products. The prototype successfully passed a 2,500-hour endurance bench test with all components in good condition and emissions performance meeting stringent standards. It has also received type approval certification from the China Classification Society (CCS). Currently, CSI Group is working closely with Zhejiang University and Baima Lake Laboratory on further research and demonstration of methanol engine technology, including the development of single-fuel high-power methanol direct injection engines and low-power lean-burn pure methanol engines.

As a leading Chinese manufacturer of large-bore, medium-speed engines for offshore and marine applications, CSI Group continues to promote technological innovation in alignment with China’s “dual carbon” (carbon peaking and neutrality) strategy. Backed by its National Enterprise Technology Centre, National Postdoctoral Research Station, and Key Corporate Research Institute, CSI focuses on developing green, low-carbon, and energy-efficient power solutions.

CSI Group has undertaken numerous national and regional science and technology projects and has received prestigious honours, including the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize) and various provincial awards. The company has successfully launched and industrialised a series of innovative products, including:

  • NL340 heavy fuel high-pressure common rail engine (first set in China)
  • NL300 high-power, high-efficiency engine (largest power output among engines with displacement under 30L per cylinder)
  • N210 dual-ECU dual-fuel engine
  • 12,200 HP V-type high-power engine

These breakthroughs continuously provide reliable “CSI Power” 宁动力 to support the high-quality development of China’s shipbuilding industry and the realisation of the nation’s maritime power strategy.
